
Why we build our pergola heaters to be taken apart
If you’ve ever put a heater under a pergola, you know the deal. Rain, snow, and crazy temperature swings just eat away at everything. Most companies build these things like a sealed black box. When a heating element finally gives out after a few years, you’re basically stuck. You have to rip the whole fixture out of the ceiling and throw it in the trash. That just feels wrong. So, we did things differently. We built our infrared units with a modular setup because we actually care about how these things hold up over a decade, not just the first season.
The “Plug-and-Play” Approach
Think of the heating element as something that’s meant to be replaced—kind of like a lightbulb. Instead of soldering everything together in a permanent mess, we use a module system. If a lamp burns out, you don’t need to call an electrician or dismantle your entire waterproof housing. You just pop the old module out and drop a new one in. It takes a few minutes.That’s it.
Keeping the Water Out (Without Locking You Out)
Usually, “waterproof” means “impossible to fix.” Most brands seal their heaters so tightly that they’re basically disposable. We took a different path. We use IP-rated gaskets and sealed ports. This keeps the rain out and the electronics dry, but still lets you get to the core of the heater when you need to. We use heavy-duty quartz tubes that can handle a beating, but we know that filaments eventually snap. When that happens, you aren’t looking at days of downtime—just a quick swap.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Now, here’s the honest part. Using connectors instead of a direct solder means there are more points where things can touch. To make sure you don’t lose any heat or deal with overheating, we use thick copper contacts. Just a tip: when you’re swapping a module, make sure those contacts are clean. A little bit of oxidation can mess with your wattage, so give them a quick wipe. Also, these units put out a ton of heat. The outer casing getshot. Really hot. When you’re installing them, give them plenty of breathing room so you don’t warp your pergola frame. Do that, keep an eye on your modules every few seasons, and the chassis will probably still be there long after the rest of the building is gone.
