
Stop the Chipping: Why a Little Heat Makes Glass Cutting Way Easier
If you’ve spent any time cutting glass tubes, you know the frustration of “chipping.” You go for a clean cut, but instead, you get those annoying corner breakouts and jagged edges. It’s a pain. The problem is pretty simple: cold glass is stubborn. It’s brittle. When your cutting tool hits a cold surface, the crack doesn’t always go where you want it to. It wanders. And when it wanders, you end up with a pile of wasted material. Here is the trick: Infrared preheating. We use shortwave infrared lamps to warm up the glass right before the blade hits. Think of it as “relaxing” the glass. The heat gets deep into the silica, making the molecules a bit more mobile. It doesn’t melt the glass—it just softens it enough so the crack actually follows your score line. The result? A clean, snappy, perpendicular break. No more jagged edges. But you can’t just throw any heater at it. You need something that hits hard and fast. We usually go with quartz halogen lamps because they reach temperature in seconds. If the heat takes too long to ramp up, the glass is already cold by the time it hits the blade. But be careful—if you blast it too hard or unevenly, you’ll trigger thermal shock and crack the tube before you even start. It’s all a balancing act between your wattage and your line speed. Sure, a higher wattage lamp lets you run the line faster, but it also dumps a lot of heat into the air. If your cooling system isn’t up to the task, you’re going to start frying your sensors or warping your mounting brackets. Nobody wants to deal with that. Putting it into practice On the shop floor, the best way to handle this is to wire your lamps into a PID controller. This keeps your temperature in a tight window so things stay consistent. We also suggest mounting the lamps in a focused array. You want the energy hitting exactly where the cut happens. This stops the heat from soaking into the rest of the tube, keeps your footprint small, and just makes the whole process feel stable.
