
Making Infrared Heat Safe (and Not Blinding)
When we build infrared heaters for bathrooms or patios, the water is the easy part. Getting an IP65 rating—basically making sure the thing doesn’t fry when it gets steamed up—is standard stuff. The real headache? The light. If you’ve ever used a standard short-wave lamp, you know that blinding glare. It’s harsh. And for a baby with eyes that aren’t fully developed yet, that kind of light can actually be dangerous. Nobody wants a heater that feels like a interrogation lamp. The trick to fixing the glare We wanted the warmth, but not the strobe light. So, we tweaked how the light behaves. By using specific quartz envelopes and some internal coatings, we can filter out that bright, visible light (the 400-700nm range) while letting the mid-to-long wave heat pass right through. The result is a soft, dim glow. It’s comforting. You get all the heat you need to stay warm, but your eyes don’t feel like they’re being attacked. What’s under the hood To keep the moisture out, we wrap everything in a sealed chassis with high-temp silicone gaskets around the lens. It’s a tight seal. Inside, there’s a halogen-filled quartz tube. We actually keep the wattage lower for bathroom setups. Why? Because nobody likes it when the air in a small room gets so hot it feels like a sauna. The trade-off Here’s the thing: you can’t have everything. When you filter out that high-energy light, you lose that “instant punch” you get from those aggressive short-wave heaters. The heat feels a bit softer. It takes a few seconds longer to really sink in, but it’s a much more natural feeling. One quick tip on the install: be careful with your wiring. If you try to “fix” the softer heat by cranking up the wattage, you risk thermal shock, which can literally crack the quartz tube. And for heaven’s sake, make sure your voltage is stable. If it dips, the lights flicker. It’s a common mistake in cheap bathroom installs, and it just looks tacky. Keep it steady, and it works like a charm.
