Making it Fit (Without the Hotspots)
When we design a custom lamp, we’re looking at the actual physical footprint. If a tube doesn’t sit flush with your glass, you end up with “dead zones” in some spots and scorching hotspots in others. It’s a mess. By tweaking the length and bending the quartz tube to mirror your furnace’s actual geometry, we make sure the heat hits exactly where it needs to. But here’s the trade-off: wattage versus length. If you go with a shorter, high-wattage lamp, you get a ton of heat density. It’s fantastic for fast ramp-up times. Just keep in mind that your housing materials are going to take a beating from that intense heat, so they need to be tough enough not to warp.
The Right Stuff for the Job
We use high-purity quartz because it can handle the shock of rapid heating and cooling without cracking. Depending on what kind of glass you’re working with, we can switch up the wavelength. If you’ve got thick glass, shortwave lamps dive deep. For surface heating, medium-wave is usually the way to go. And the custom shapes? They aren’t just about “fitting in the box.” We can actually contour the lamps to follow the curve of your mold. This puts the heat closer to the glass, which means you stop wasting energy heating the air around it.
The Real-World Trade-offs
Now, custom shapes do make the wiring a bit more interesting. You can’t always just grab a socket off the shelf when your lamp is bent or shortened. We handle the lead wire lengths and connector types for you, so you can plug everything in without putting stress on the quartz seals. One last tip: when you tighten up your layout, your furnace walls are going to feel more heat. You’ll want to spend some time calibrating your PID controllers to make sure everything stays balanced with that new, denser heat array.
